If you do not reach for some tissues while reading Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, then you must not believe in first loves. This beautifully written and heart-wrenching story transported me to 1986 Omaha, Nebraska, and made me feel as if I were experiencing the hardships these two misfits go through on their quest to discover their own identity.

Rowell introduces us to Park, a seemingly cool and confident boy who unexpectedly falls for Eleanor, a red-headed, chubby, shy, and painfully lonely girl.

Eleanor and Park's relationship starts off slow, but soon you are deeply invested in their relationship. Your heart will ache each time either of them experiences anything but love for the other.

This book tackles issues such as bullying, discrimination, domestic violence and body image. These are extremely complex and delicate topics, especially when the two main characters are young teenagers, but Rowell conveys these mature matters perfectly. When reading Eleanor & Park, you will be reminded that there are children who must deal with such hardships and lack any kind of parental help or guidance. There is a specific scene that stayed with me, when Eleanor wishes she could ask her teacher for a toothbrush, something we probably all take for granted.

Rowell successfully writes an authentic and not-at-all-cutesy or sappy story of two young teenagers falling deeply in love. This book is for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, or understand the incredible force one can feel when falling in love for the first time. Eleanor & Park is also great for anyone looking for a good cry. Rowell's writing and plot is reminiscent of John Green. Fans of The Fault in Our Stars will definitely love this book.
